Mid‐infrared spectroscopy study of aqueous solution of ethylene glycol using chemometrics analysis and two‐dimensional correlation spectroscopy

Abstract 1, 2‐Ethandiol (ethylene glycol, EG) and its mixtures with water (W) have widespread industrial biological applications due to their special physiochemical properties. In this study, two‐dimensional correlation spectroscopy chemometrics analysis of infrared spectra are used characterize structural features EG–W binary solutions. Three distinctive regions observed diverse contributions hydrophobic backbone (CH 2 groups) hydrophilic (OH functional) groups. Both groups simultaneously considered local structure in each triple region. The aqueous solutions EG changed from EG‐like ( x w ≤ 0.27) W‐like solution > 0.83), where is W mole fraction. wide range (0.27 < 0.83) stabilized by –OH … O (proper hydrogen bonded) –CH (improper bonded). Also, trend relative equilibrium concentration variation W, EG, identified cluster propose chemical model interaction.
